Executive Director of Education Consult Africa supports Free SHS policy amendment

The Executive Director of Education Consult Africa, Mr. Daniel Oppong, has has thrown his weight behind the proposed amendment of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

This comes after the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, raised concerns about the challenges facing the Free SHS system, including food shortages, inadequate accommodation, and inconsistent academic calendars.

While Mr. Daniel Oppong acknowledged that the policy was well-intentioned, he emphasized that its implementation has been hindered by significant challenges that must be addressed.

Speaking on Classic FM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show hosted by Rev. Nana Amakye Sieh, Mr. Oppong called for a holistic approach to the policy, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive review to identify and resolve the underlying issues

“H.E. John Dramani Mahama has promised to review the Free SHS Policy to address the challenges associated with it.

“The truth is, the major challenge faced by the policy has been food supply. Since 2020, providing adequate food for learners has been a significant issue. We hope that the current administration will be able to address this problem effectively.” He said.

Mr. Daniel Oppong went on to endorse a proposal suggesting that funds allocated for student meals be given directly to the heads of Senior High Schools, as this would empower them to procure the necessary food supplies. He explained that, with proper oversight, this approach could significantly improve the food supply situation.

However, he voiced his concern regarding the potential burden on headteachers, urging that they should not be required to pre-finance the feeding of students.

“There is a proposal suggesting that funds allocated for feeding students should be given directly to the heads of various senior high schools, allowing them to procure the necessary food items. I believe that if the government implements proper supervision, this approach could be very successful. However, my biggest hope and concern is that headteachers will not be required to pre-finance the feeding of learners.” He stated.
