The Member of Parliament for Atiwa East and former Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei-Asare, has accused the current Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, of deliberately manipulating data to portray the Akufo-Addo administration in a negative light.
According to her, the Finance Minister failed to acknowledge key achievements of the previous government during his presentation of the national budget statement.
Addressing the floor of Parliament, Hon. Abena Osei-Asare highlighted several economic and infrastructural milestones that she believes were overlooked in the Finance Minister’s update.
“They failed to recognize in their update that we moved GDP from GHC219 billion to GHC 1.2 trillion in December 2024. Mr. Speaker, to recognize that we invested and connected 276 communities to the national grid in 2024. Mr. Speaker, they failed to recognize that we completed 1,072 units of affordable housing with the CDC.
“Mr. Speaker, they failed to also let Ghanaians know that we invested in the Phase 2 of the Tema Motorway runabout and also we invested in the construction of the flyover that leads to East Legon and the Spintex road Mr. Speaker, they failed, but Ghanaians have seen all that.” She said
Osei-Asare also took issue with the omission of details regarding the 24-hour economy policy, which has been a key discussion point in Ghana’s economic agenda. She criticized the lack of clarity and feasibility studies backing the initiative.
“Mr. Speaker, isn’t it a shame that the much-talked-about 24-hour economy did not find any meaningful expression in this budget? Rather, we are being told to wait another week for further details.” She stated
Raising further concerns, the former Deputy Finance Minister described as alarming the government’s decision to allocate GHC13.8 billion of Ghana’s oil and mineral revenues to an initiative without a clear implementation framework.
“Mr. Speaker, isn’t it scary that no feasibility studies have been done yet government decides to push our oil revenues and our mineral revenues, 13.8 billion, to a policy that, Mr. Speaker, they did not bring any framework for us to implement it.” she quizzed.
