COPIO mourns Obogu accident victims, urges urgent action for safer roads

The Centre of Posterity Interest Organization (COPIO), has joined the people of Obogu, the Saviour Church community, and the entire nation in mourning the tragic loss of sixteen young lives in the Juaso–Nkawkaw highway accident.

The accident, which claimed the lives of vibrant youth described as “children, siblings, and the future of our country,” has left the community devastated. COPIO described the incident as “a heartbreaking tragedy that has created an unfillable void.”

In its statement, issued on August 15, 2025, COPIO also linked the accident to a troubling pattern of preventable tragedies, including the recent military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight service personnel, widely referred to as the “Gallant 8.” The organization stressed that these incidents highlight the urgent need for decisive reforms in Ghana’s transport and road safety systems.

COPIO called on the Government of Ghana, the Asante Akyem South Municipal Assembly, and all citizens to extend support to the grieving families and to take urgent steps to prevent future occurrences.

Among the key actions recommended were:

  • Immediate and sustained support for families: including financial assistance, counselling, and livelihood support for dependents of the victims.

  • Stricter road safety enforcement: such as tighter regulation of heavy-duty vehicles, regular maintenance inspections, and tougher penalties for reckless drivers.

  • Safer travel policies for youth and community groups: with clear guidelines to ensure the protection of vulnerable travelers.

The statement was signed by Mr. Mustapha Maison Yeboah, Chief Executive Officer of COPIO

PRESS RELEASE
HONORING THEIR MEMORY, DEMANDING ACTION: COPIO’S CALL FOR SUPPORT AND
SAFER ROADS
The Centre of Posterity Interest Organization (COPIO) joins the people of Obogu, the Saviour
Church community, and the entire nation in mourning the heartbreaking loss of sixteen
promising young lives in the recent Juaso–Nkawkaw highway accident. These were not just
church members; they were children, siblings, and the future of our country taken too soon in a
tragedy that has left an unfillable void.

As Ghana mourns not only these sixteen youth but also the Gallant 8 lost in the recent tragic
helicopter crash, alongside many other preventable accidents across the nation, COPIO
renews its urgent call for decisive action to protect lives on our roads, in our airspace, and
across all modes of travel.

In this moment of deep grief, COPIO calls on the Government of Ghana, the Asante Akyem
South Municipal Assembly, and all citizens of goodwill to stand firmly with the bereaved
families. We urge:

1. Immediate and sustained support: including financial assistance, counselling
services, and livelihood aid to help affected families rebuild their lives.
2. Enhanced road safety enforcement: strict regulation of heavy-duty vehicles, regular
maintenance checks, and swift penalties for reckless driving.
3. National action on safer transport for youth and community groups: with clear
policies to ensure the protection of vulnerable travelers.

As Ghanaians, we have a moral responsibility to ensure that such tragedies are not repeated.
Let us not only mourn these precious lives but also honor them by building a safer, more
compassionate country.

Our hearts, prayers, and solidarity are with the families today and always.
Signed
Mustapha Maison Yeboah
