Abena Osei Asare urges GFA, NSA, Sports Ministry to prioritize local players in Black Stars selection

Former Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, Abena Osei Asare, has called on the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and the Minister of Sports to ensure that local players are given the opportunity to play for the national team, the Black Stars.

Speaking in Parliament in the wake of Ghana’s brilliant performance in the latest round of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, Abena Osei Asare expressed her concern over the limited representation of players from Ghana’s local league in the national squad.

She called for more local players to be involved in the Black Stars, pointing out that only three players from the Ghana Premier League were called up for the matches against Chad and Madagascar.

“Mr. Speaker, my only concern is that we don’t see many of our local players in the Black Stars, and that is something we must address. We keep saying we should appreciate what we have at home, yet our local players are not given enough chances,” she stated.

She further highlighted the talent within Ghana’s domestic league, mentioning clubs such as Asante Kotoko and Samartex, which have produced skilled players capable of competing at the highest level.

She therefore urged the NSA, GFA, and the Ministry of Sports to take deliberate steps to ensure that local players are given fair opportunities to represent Ghana at the international level.

“Most of the time, it’s the foreign-based players who are called up, but we have teams like Kotoko, Samartex, and others with very talented players who deserve the opportunity,” she added.

“We are calling on the National Sports Authority, the GFA, and the Minister for Sports to make sure they do everything possible for us to see more local players in the Black Stars squad,” she said.
