Government to introduce a dedicated levy on fuel purchases – Muntaka announces

Interior Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase constituency in the Ashanti Region, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak has announced plans to introduce a dedicated levy on fuel purchases.

According to him, at least 10 pesewas per litre will help the government to mobilize enough funds to purchase fire tender for the Ghana National Fire Service to ensure quip responds to fire outbreaks.

Speaking in an interview during a visit to the devastating fire scene at Adum in Kumasi, Muntaka lamented inadequate fire tender in the country.

“All of us need to make a contribution and only to make a contribution in my view, I am doing a paper to cabinet that look, the fuel that we buy, let’s dedicate just 10 pesewas per litre for fire. Because as we speak, when I went to the Ministry of Interior, I realized the newest tender that we have was in 2014. That is more than 10 years, you and I know the way they run.” He announced.

“In about six (6), seven (7) years, they become obsolete. Yes, the newest tender we have is more than ten years old. Why? The whole ten years, as a country we have not bought even a single fire tender. ” The Minister lamented.

According to him, people should stop blaming firefighters when there is a fire outbreak because they also go through some frustrations due to obsolete equipment they are using.

He said the dedicated fund will bring some relief to the government to address the concerns of the Ghana National Fire Service.

“So sometimes we all blame the fire officers for nothing because they are using obsolete equipment. So sometimes they go through frustrations so one of the things I think even 5 pesewas on a litre, what it means is that we will have a dedicated fund to support fire.” Muntaka stated.
