President Mahama orders restoration of illegally filled Ramsar site

President John Dramani Mahama has directed Caitec Motors, a private company that has illegally filled a Ramsar site and a water retention basin at Mallam Junction, to restore the area by removing the silt.

The directives from the President is aimed at preventing further environmental damage and protecting the properties and lives of residents around the area.

President John Dramani Mahama said this during a tour of flood-prone areas in the Greater Accra Region. He expressed strong concerns about the destruction caused by unauthorized developments in these critical areas.

“They creating destruction for other people’s properties and even loss of life. Sometimes when it floods heavily, we lose human life, and so it’s not because we don’t have a sympathy for people like that, but we must enforce the bylaws, and the point is, the assembly here, how did you set and allow this to happen? Can you imagine the volume of water that this place alone can hold when it rains?” He quizzed.

President Mahama further explained that, the water retention basin plays a crucial role in flood management and ordered Caitec Motors to as a matter of urgency clear the silt from the site.

“If you fill it up and you’d say there should just be a drain passing through, the drain cannot contain that water. And so let’s do what we have to do. They should remove all this be at the cost of the people who did it. They should take this back where they brought it from.” President Mahama ordered.
