Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has assured Ghanaian students studying abroad that the government will increase their allowances.
According to him, the monthly stipend that has been maintained for many years is not enough for Ghanaian students so they are going to increase it to enhance better living conditions for them.
“I also take the view that your monthly stipend, when I return, I will send President Mahama a report that your monthly stipend that has been maintained for many years is too small. So we assure you that we are going to take immediate action.” The sector Minister made this assurance when speaking to Ghanaians in Benin during an official visit.
“As soon as I landed here, I asked our acting head of Missions, how are my students doing? And what is their state and I was given a comprehensive report. I have asked the Director of Scholarship Secretariat to see me when I return so that we can improve your conditions.” He said.
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu constituency said Ghanaian students studying abroad are the most vulnerable and deserve special attention.
Hon. Okudzeto indicated that one of the moves by the NDC government to improve the condition of the Ghanaian students studying abroad is the establishment of school desks in all the 11 diplomatic missions.
He assured the students that all their challenges are going to be addressed.
“You heard recently that I have established a student desk in all the 11 diplomatic missions, as part of our Consulates duties, in my opinion students are the most vulnerable. They are soo young, they don’t have their parents with them, they are not working, they are not earning anything so they deserve special attention. That is why I have established these student desks so that our Consular Department can pay special attention. So be well assured that we are going to address your challenges.” He indicated.
