Asantehene commits to ensuring lasting peace in Bawku

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring lasting peace in areas affected by communal conflict, particularly in the northern parts of the country.

Speaking during a courtesy call by a delegation from the UK Advanced Command and Staff Course at the Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene emphasized the critical role of traditional authorities in maintaining peace and stability.

the Asantehene revealed that he is confident recent mediation talks with feuding factions will bring peace to the area.

“We need peace to develop. My duty, together with the traditional authority, is to make sure that there is peace everywhere. Therefore, we make sure that we adjudicate issues when there are conflicts everywhere so that the government can also have peace to do its work.” He said.

The Asantehene is currently leading a mediation process aimed at resolving long-standing communal tensions in Bawku, a town located in the Upper East Region near the Burkina Faso border. As part of the peace efforts, Otumfuo began engaging with the feuding factions on April 29, bringing them to the negotiation table under the guidance of traditional wisdom and authority.

Otumfuo acknowledged the challenges in addressing such deep-rooted conflicts but expressed confidence in the progress made so far.

“Recently there have been some communal conflict within the upper part of Ghana, closer to Burkina Faso (Bawku), but we are putting in every effort to ensure there is lasting peace,” he stated

Residents from the troubled areas have welcomed the Asantehene’s intervention with optimism, hopeful that his involvement will lead to a lasting resolution and allow development efforts to resume.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II remains one of Ghana’s most respected peacemakers, having played instrumental roles in several national and regional reconciliation efforts over the years.
