Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called for the removal of the entire leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC), stating that the commission in its current form is “unfit for purpose.”
Speaking on PM Express on JoyNews on Wednesday, June 25 which was monitored by Elvisanokyenews.net, he argued that the commission has consistently failed in its core mandate of ensuring credible, transparent, and inclusive elections in Ghana.
According to him, Ghana’s electoral laws make no room for election stalemates, and yet under the current EC leadership, such outcomes have become disturbingly frequent. He stated that these recurring problems indicate either a lack of competence or a deliberate failure to act within the bounds of the law.
“We are having a wrong election management body in place and so that is a subject of reset in future. It means that bringing it back into an institution that is fit for purpose, the way it is existing now, it’s not fit for purpose.
“With all the laws that we have, you cannot still be having an election that will go into a stalemate. There is no anticipation of any stalemate in elections in any of our laws, unless people don’t want to do their work well. It’s a clear case of negligence or inability to perform its functions, so it’s a good reason why the Electoral Commission needs to be reset.” He stated.
Referencing the unresolved parliamentary election in Ablekuma North, Asiedu Nketia said the situation was just the latest in a series of failures by the Jean Mensa-led Commission. He further criticized the EC’s handling of recent electoral processes, citing multiple instances of what he described as negligence and mismanagement.
He referred to the disenfranchisement of the people of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) during the 2020 general elections, when a whole constituency went unrepresented in Parliament for four years.
“Remember four years ago, there was the issue of SALL, a whole constituency went unrepresented for four years, so when this commission as presently constituted took over the reins of the Electoral Commission, they have never done an election that is satisfactory.
“These two major elections, the first one, one constituency, went unrepresented for four years. And then their second election is this one, and then with the by-elections at Ayawaso West Wuogon, everything has been a mess, so there is overwhelming evidence that this commission is not fit for purpose.” He disclosed
Chairman Asiedu Nketia called for the removal of the top three leaders of the Electoral Commission to help restore public trust and credibility in Ghana’s electoral processes.
“If any serious country will want to maintain this type of Electoral Commission, then I don’t know what the country is about. I think the three top leaders must all go, they have mismanaged the commission so badly.
