Asiedu Nketia calls for separation of Attorney-General and Justice Minister roles to strengthen anti-corruption efforts

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called on Ghana’s Constitutional Review Committee to consider a separation of the roles of the Attorney-General and the Minister of Justice as part of reforms to strengthen good governance and the fight against corruption.

Speaking at an Anti-Corruption Summit held in Accra on Thursday, Johnson Asiedu Nketia described the current arrangement where one individual serves simultaneously as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice as a fundamental flaw in Ghana’s governance structure.

“We were wrong in combining the office of Attorney-General and the Minister of Justice, as Attorney-General, you are supposed to prosecute wrongdoing, but as a Minister of Justice sitting in Cabinet, you are part of a collective that formulates and approves government policies.

“It becomes extremely difficult for that same person to turn around and prosecute fellow Cabinet members.”

According to the Chairperson of the ruling National Democratic Congress, this overlap of responsibilities creates a conflict of interest, weakens the independence of the Attorney-General’s office, and undermines public trust in the justice system

He urged the Constitutional Review Committee to take bold steps to ensure institutional independence and restore public confidence in Ghana’s legal and accountability frameworks.

The call from the NDC Chairman, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia aligns with growing advocacy from civil society and legal experts who have long argued that separating the two roles would enhance prosecutorial independence, ensure better checks and balances, and ultimately improve the state’s ability to tackle corruption at all levels of government.
