Asiedu Nketiah urges traditional leaders to help resolve local disputes to save resources for development

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has called on traditional leaders across the country to play a more active role in resolving local disputes to safeguard national resources for development.

Speaking at the 2025 Hogbetsotso Festival, held under the theme “Building Bridges: From a Common History to a Common Destiny,” Mr. Asiedu Nketiah expressed concern that institutions responsible for maintaining peace are increasingly becoming areas where peace is rather needed, resulting in governments spending huge sums of money to settle chieftaincy disputes and related conflicts.

He lamented that such expenditures divert vital funds that could otherwise be used to address pressing developmental needs in communities.

“My worry now is that the institution that is supposed to help us maintain peace in the country is unfortunately becoming a ground where peace itself is needed, forcing governments in power to spend money that should be used for development on settling chieftaincy disputes and conflicts.”

He therefore appealed to chiefs and traditional councils to use dialogue, unity, and mutual respect in resolving local misunderstandings, noting that peace at the grassroots level is essential for national stability and progress.

He explained that when traditional authorities take the lead in maintaining harmony within their jurisdictions, it allows the government to channel more resources into education, health, infrastructure, and job creation, all of which contribute to improving the lives of citizens.
