The Member of Parliament for Manhyia North and Deputy Ranking Member on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, Hon. Akwasi Konadu, has issued a strong warning about Ghana’s worsening environmental crisis, saying the country is “sitting on an ecological time bomb” due to the devastating impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on the fight against illegal mining, Hon. Konadu lamented that the destruction caused by galamsey has gone beyond water pollution to affect forests, farmlands, and wildlife.
“What is happening currently is that we are at an ecological time bomb, we are sitting on an ecological time bomb. When our forest resources are going, almost everything, plants, native plants, animals, and all of these things are going, aside our river bodies and the rest.”
The legislator accused some political leaders of showing hypocrisy in the fight against illegal mining, claiming that many have abandoned their earlier promises to protect the environment once in power.
“But the action or the events of our last is nothing more short of people trying as much as possible to relay what they promised whilst in opposition by presuming or pretending at that point in time wanting to care about the environment.”
Hon. Konadu called for genuine political will, consistent enforcement of mining laws, and national unity in the fight against galamsey. He warned that if the current trend continues, Ghana could face irreversible environmental damage that would endanger future generations
