Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged the party delegates to elect a flagbearer who can help the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to win the 2028 elections.
He said it is hard time for the NPP to put an end to tribal and religion and focus on someone who the general public have trust in and can solve problems in the country.
According to him, democracy is not about tribe or religion but individualism. “If the NPP wants to win the elections, we have to present a person who can solve our problems. Someone whom the general public have interest in and can lead us to power.” Ex-President Kufuor said this at the launch of the party’s new think tank, the Patriotic Institute.
The launch of the Patriotic Institute comes as the party is preparing to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 elections on 31 January, 2026.
Kufuor lamented the rising tribal and religious tension in the party.
He stressed that the NDC has already branded the NPP as a tribal party so the party risks losing the 2028 election again if they attack themselves with religion.
His comment comes after the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso and a member of Ken Agyapong campaign team, Stephen Amoah popularly known as Sticka claimed that it is hard for a Christians to vote for a Muslim as a President of Ghana.
His comment flooded several reactions on social media.
The NPP has been facing internal tensions and personal attacks after the party lost the 2024 elections.
Their personal attacks are currently between the camp of the former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who has declared his intention to contest as the flagbearer and the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennnedy Agyapong.
