The Acting Bono East Regional Manager of the Islamic Education Unit, Alhaji Ahmed Ishawu Saeed, has appealed to the government, traditional rulers, and community leaders to take urgent and concrete steps to address the growing issue of illicit drug use among the youth.
In an exclusive interview with our reporter, he stated that the future of the country rests heavily on the shoulders of its young people, hence the need for the government to take immediate action to tackle the menace
He described the rising trend of drug abuse as both “sad and unfortunate,” noting that many young people are turning to substances such as Tramadol commonly known as Tramo and a new dangerous drug called Red, which are being widely abused despite their harmful effects.
“Whatever message, transformation, or revolution you have, it all depends on the youth. If the youth are heading in the right direction, the country will develop. That is why, in every initiative, the youth are always the target.
“It is sad and unfortunate to see our youth increasingly involved in the use of illicit drugs. That is why I want to engage tribal associations and youth groups. Many young people turn to drugs due to peer pressure, frustration, or the mistaken belief that it is a way of life.
“Recently, apart from Tramadol (commonly known as Tramo), another dangerous substance called Red has surfaced. Tramadol is a painkiller, but when abused, it can cause someone to lose their sanity. I’m calling on our religious leaders and the media to step up efforts in the fight against drug abuse.” He stated.
Alhaji Ahmed Ishawu Saeed called on the media to intensify public education campaigns. According to him, the responsibility to safeguard the future must be shared by all stakeholders. He further appealed to traditional and community leaders to identify and act against individuals who sell these substances within the communities
“I’m appealing to traditional and community leaders to introduce strong measures to curb this menace. We know the people selling these drugs in our communities. Many of them build beautiful houses and drive flashy cars, but they do so at the cost of young lives. Do not give them that opportunity don’t trade your future for their wealth.” He stated.
Advising the youth, he said, “To the youth, I say this: taking drugs to escape your problems will only worsen your situation. When the drug wears off, you may find that you’ve created 10,000 more problems for yourself.
“Drug abuse destroys your health, tarnishes your image, ruins your reputation, and can even bring disgrace to your family. Society will lose respect for you, and you will be unable to live a responsible life.
“I urge all young people to stay away from drugs. The future of every society depends on its youth. Without responsible, disciplined, and healthy young people, no nation can progress.”
