The Leader of the Catholic Church born Robert Francis Prevost has explained why he chose the name Pope Leo XIV.
According to the former Bishop and Cardinal, Pope Leo XIII addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution during his regime.
He said his decision to choose Pope Leo XIV has many reasons but his predecessor’s boldness on industrial revolution tops all.
“I intentionally decided to take the name Leo XIV. The decision to choose this name has many reasons, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical Rerum Novarum addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution.” The new Pope stated.
The Leader of the Roman Catholic church indicated that currently, the church gives everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution.
“In our own day, the Church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and labour.” He added.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State and chose Pope Leo XIV following the death of Pope Francis.
In his first Sunday service, the Pope said he considered his first Sunday as a gift from God.
“I consider it a gift from God that the first Sunday of my service is a good shepherd Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Easter.” He said.
He also appealed to World Leaders to ensure peace.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV is expected to be formally inaugurated at a mass in St Peter’s Square on 18 May, 2025.
