The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, has said it is unfair to tag galamsey Chinese nationals with illegal mining popularly known as “galamey”.
According to him, Chinese people can not secure permits and licenses to engage in galamey.
He said it is Ghanaian nationals who have the permits and license and invite the Chinese nationals to come and work with them.
Adding that even though Chinese nationals who are living in Ghana are there for a living, so are the Ghanaians who employ them in their various companies.
“I don’t really know why when people say galamsey, they only point out Chinese, but actually it is not only Chinese. The issue is not originally from China because those mining Chinese people can not get the license, Chinese people can not get the permit.” Tong Defa stated.
“It is the Ghanaian people who throw Chinese people over here. Those people who have even got red handed are just gold mining workers who have come here to make a living. So it is unfair to me and the majority of Chinese if you say that galamsey is caused by Chinese.” He added.
The ambassador stated that a lot of Chinese have contributed a lot towards national building but Ghanaians ignore their effort and concentrate on galamsey.
According to him, many roads in Ghana were constructed by Chinese companies and have done many other things in different sectors.
“A lot of Chinese are involved in many sectors in this country, a lot of your building was built by Chinese companies, your roads are constructed by Chinese companies, how many Ghanaians know that and even if they know they will always say galamey.” He stated.
Illegal mining is one of the problems Ghana is facing.
According to report, Ghana risk losing many of its natural resources through galamsey.
