The Executive Director of Eco-Conscious Citizen, Awulah Serwah, has urged government to declare a state of emergency in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
According to her, the menace has reached alarming levels and poses a grave threat to the health, environment, and future of the nation if immediate action is not taken.
“We need to declare a state of emergency and stop the cancer from growing. If we do not act, the window of opportunity will close,” she warned.
Madam Serwah also expressed concern over misconceptions held by some traders who believe that washing vegetables with salt is enough to make them safe for consumption.
“It’s very sad that some traders think that all we need to do is wash the vegetables with salt. No, that will not happen. We are being poisoned, and this situation will continue until the government takes the first decisive step to deal with it,” she stressed.
She called for urgent, bold, and comprehensive measures to stop galamsey and safeguard the health and security of Ghanaians.
