Entrance University Chancellor calls for suspension of foreign scholarships to boost local universities

The Chancellor of the Entrance University of Health Sciences, Dr. Samuel Amo Tobbin, has called on government to temporarily halt the award of foreign scholarships to Ghanaian students and instead channel those resources into strengthening local universities and supporting students studying within the country.

Dr. Tobbin expressed concern over the large sums of public funds spent each year on scholarships for students studying abroad, arguing that the same investment could yield far greater benefits if directed toward improving teaching, infrastructure, and research in Ghana’s tertiary institutions.

He observed that many students who study medicine and other professional courses overseas often face language barriers and learning difficulties that hinder their performance when they return to Ghana.

“When you see our people, I mean our children being sent abroad, some of them come in and they are not able to pass the licensure exams, not because they are no good, but because of the language.”

Dr. Tobbin emphasized that Ghana has made significant progress in developing quality tertiary education institutions capable of providing world-class training, especially in the health sciences. He therefore urged policymakers to prioritize funding for local universities to enhance laboratories, lecture facilities, and faculty development.

He further noted that investing in homegrown talent and academic excellence would not only reduce capital flight but also help retain skilled professionals within Ghana’s health sector.

“Some of them must learn Ukrainian language before they start learning the main course and I think that if GetFund the Scholarship Scheme Secretariat, can channel those money that we export to foreign countries, we can channel the money to the local universities, I think it will be of a big help to us.”
