Government to begin contractor debt payments by end of July

President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has dislcosed that his government will begin settling debts owed to contractors by the end of July 2025.

According to the President, this move is part of broader efforts to revive stalled infrastructure projects across the country.

The President made this announcement during a meeting with members of the Council of State at the Jubilee House on Monday. He explained that the Ministry of Finance has already set aside funds to begin settling arrears owed to contractors, with road contractors receiving top priority.

“With regards to the issue you raised about payment to contractors, payment is about to start from the end of this month.

“The Minister of Finance has put some money aside to begin to clear the areas of contractors. So I’m sure that some of the contractors who have been working on your projects will be paid so that they can go back on site and continue their work.” He disclosed

President John Dramani Mahama, addressing the Council, stressed on the importance of the initiative, noting that numerous road projects have stalled due to a lack of funding—disrupting transportation and hindering economic activities in several regions.

“He’s prioritizing payments to road contractors because several road contracts have stalled and slowed down and so getting the contractors to go back to site and continue work as quickly as possible is one of the priorities of government.” He said.

Details of the planned payments including timelines, scope, and funding sources are expected to be outlined in the upcoming mid-year review of the 2025 Budget Statement, which will also give an update on the performance of the economy in the first half of the year.
