The Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has strongly condemned the recent attack on health professionals at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital.
The incident, which sparked public outrage, followed the circulation of a video showing a heated confrontation between emergency ward staff and a group of individuals, including social media activist Ralph.
Addressing the matter, Hon. Akandoh described the assault as unacceptable, stressing that no level of provocation justifies physical attacks on health workers.
“What is very important is that irrespective of the level of provocation at any health facility in this country, it does not warrant any physical attack or assault on any health professionals. I do not think that our health professionals deserve this kind of treatment. It does not necessarily mean that the allegation of delay in attending to them is true or false.”
The Minister also disclosed that the alleged delay in attending to victims of an accident, which reportedly triggered the confrontation, would be thoroughly investigated.
Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced plans to beef up security at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital to safeguard staff, patients, and visitors. He stated that investigations have been launched into the circumstances surrounding the reported delay in care, with steps being taken to address any identified lapses.
“Let me also make the point that we will investigate the alleged delay in the healthcare or in the treatment of those who were involved in the accident. This has also brought to the fore the security of the health personnel, especially at the Ridge Hospital.
“I have instructed that that must continue and we must put measures in place to prevent the recurrence of this particular incident. The law must take its course, so the issue must be investigated and the law must take its course.
