Mahama Ayariga condemns military brutality and calls for calm in Bawku

The Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned the alleged involvement of military personnel in the destruction of the statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.

The incident, which occurred on July 13, has sparked outrage among residents and heightened tensions in the conflict-prone area.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Majority Leader described the act as “unacceptable” and called for an immediate investigation by the senior hierarchy of the Ghana Armed Forces.

“I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the unacceptable act of destruction of the statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area Asigri Abugrago Azoka II by some military personnel. I demand an immediate investigation by the senior hierarchy of the military. In the same vein I also condemn the brutality of the military yesterday 13th July 2025.”

The Bawku Central MP also addressed a violent gun attack carried out by unknown youth on a vehicle being escorted by soldiers, stating that such actions are equally unacceptable and must not be repeated.

While denouncing both the military’s actions and the retaliatory violence, The Legislature appealed to the Kusasi youth to remain calm and allow government efforts to take their course. He disclosed that urgent steps are being taken to investigate reports of infiltration within the military ranks by individuals attempting to politicize the situation and worsen the already fragile security in Bawku.

“The violent gun attack by unknown youth on the vehicle escorted by soldiers is equally condemned and further attacks must cease.

“I however appeal to the Kusasis youth to calm down as Government takes urgent steps to investigate the infiltrations into the ranks of the military by elements who seek to politicize and further destabilize the situation in Bawku.” He stated.

Mahama Ayariga also extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the violence and expressed sympathy to those who have suffered as a result of the military’s actions.

“My condolences to the families of the bereaved and those who have suffered military brutalities as a result of yesterday’s unfortunate and deadly incidents.”
