The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Dr. Hanna Bisiw-Kotei, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for Manso Nkwanta, Mr. Owusu Mensah, of operating an illegal mining site dangerously close to a basic school in the community.
In an interview with the media, she disclosed that during their visit, an individual believed to be connected to the Chairman attempted to reach out in what she interpreted as an effort to influence their inspection.
“The NPP chairman for Manso Nkwanta, chairman Owusu Mensah, he’s the owner of an illigal minning site near a school we visited at Manso Nkawanta I’m saying it for a two million percent fact, if they’re saying anything like two million percent.
“If you get to know me, I’ll not just mention something that I don’t know, and whilst we’re there, he got one official to call us and what I told them was that we are not here to negotiate anything with anyone. If there’s anything to negotiate, it’s for the repair and the restoration of the ecosystem that they have destroyed in this community and to give the life of this community back to them.” She stated.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Development Fund expressed concern over the environmental degradation in the area, especially considering the proximity of illegal mining activities to educational institutions. She seized the occasion to explain the need for both preventive and restorative measures to protect the wellbeing of the community.
“If you’re meant to develop a community, you must think both preventively and reactively. Sadly, the situation here has deteriorated so much that we are struggling to even assess what exactly is happening,” She said.
