The Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Madam Awula Serwaa, has issued a passionate call for the complete repeal of Legislative Instrument 2462 (LI2462), describing it as a deeply flawed policy that poses a serious threat to Ghana’s environment and public health.
In an interview with the media, Madam Serwaa revealed that amending LI2462 is not a sufficient response to the environmental crisis facing the nation.
She dismissed suggestions that LI2462 could be salvaged through amendments and called on the government and civil society to unite in demanding its total revocation.
“It’s clear that this LI2462 needs to be repealed rather than amended, as I said earlier, the President himself in the run up to the election said he was going to do it. He hasn’t done it, but we’ve been told that when parliament comes back, it will be repealed, and we believe that this is going to be the case. LI2462 is a bad piece of legislation. I used to call it a perverse piece of legislation, it is, we believe it is going to be repealed.” She stated.
Madam Awula Serwaa also pointed to the escalating devastation caused by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which according to her is destroying farmlands, polluting rivers, and endangering food security.
Her concerns come amid reports of Ghanaian food exports being rejected abroad due to contamination, an issue she attributes to weak environmental oversight allowed under the current legislation.
“Illegal mining is destroying Ghana. I don’t think that if you’re in the diaspora, it’s not affecting you, recently, some food items taken to the US were found to be contaminated, so we are all suffering. We are all facing an existential threat and we should move away from LI2460. We should take it as a given. It’s a bad piece of legislation. It should be revoked. No talk about amendment. It should be revoked and let’s move forward. How do we save Ghana from the brink of ecological disaster?
