The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, has made a strong call for a fundamental shift in Ghana’s political culture, urging that Members of Parliament (MPs) should not view parliamentary service as a pathway to ministerial appointments.
In an interview on Face to Face on Channel One TV with Umaru Sanda Amad which was monitored by Elvisanokyenews.net, Mr. Kwetey criticized what he described as a growing trend of individuals contesting parliamentary seats primarily to secure positions in the executive arm of government, rather than out of a genuine commitment to legislative service.
According to him party leadership and elected officials must lead by example and embrace a true transformation in political practice. According to him, the notion that Parliament is merely a stepping stone to the executive branch runs contrary to democratic principles.
“When we moved into the campaign and spoke about resetting Ghana, perhaps some members of our own party thought it was just a slogan—meant only for others outside the NDC. But the real reset must begin within the NDC. Charity begins at home.
“I ran for Parliament not because I was hoping for a job in government. I served two terms, and I stepped aside, because I never saw Parliament as a means to get appointed as a minister. Ministerial office should be seen as a bonus, not the main prize,” he stated.
The NDC General Secretary also called for a constitutional review to address the overlap between the legislature and the executive.
“We need to seriously reconsider the idea that MPs can also become ministers. It blurs the lines of accountability and weakens our legislative function. We must decouple Parliament from the Executive to allow for genuine lawmakers—those who are truly focused on the people’s business, not personal advancement.
“If your real goal is to serve in government, be honest about it. Don’t deceive the public by using Parliament as a backdoor. The House is for lawmaking. That should be your primary mandate. That is the reset we need.” He explained
