Nkwanta Senior High School closed down

 

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region to close down.

The GES directive follows a tribal conflict in the area.

According to a report, the situation is beyond control which has resulted in the shooting of which two students have been shot and one student has lost his life.

“The conflict has escalated and official engagement between the school authorities, GES and security officials has been held and they concluded that the school should be closed down immediately.” One official told the media under condition of anonymity.

The school authorities said the lives of the students are in danger and that the closure of the school has become necessary.

According to the Acting Regional Director of Education, they are cooperating with the necessary stakeholders and the security agencies to ensure that the lives of the students and the staff are protected.

He said they are putting measures in place to ensure that the students get police escort.

“The lives of the students and the staff are important so we are working together with the security agencies to ensure they are protected, it has become necessary to get police escort for the students and so we are working on that.”

The conflict has created tension in the area and the residents are living with fear and panic.

It is not clear what caused the tribal violence.

Reports say people around the areas are not feeling safe as the conflict continues to escalate.

The Acting Regional Director of Education indicated that official communication will be done to recall the students and the staff when clam returns to the area.
