Former Majority Leader and veteran lawmaker, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has expressed strong confidence in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership, describing him as the “man of the moment” and the right candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.
In an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, July 21, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said he was convinced Dr. Bawumia had the qualities and momentum needed to emerge victorious.
The former Majority Leader also expressed hope that Dr. Bawumia would not only win the primaries but do so with a commanding margin. However, he cautioned that a slim victory could signal divisions within the party.
“I don’t blink an eye over that. I think that he has what it takes. He’s a man of the moment, and regardless of whatever anybody does, I believe that he will still emerge.
“I want a situation where he’ll be able to garner more than the percentage he garnered the previous time and perhaps attain close to about 70%.
“If he does that, uniting the party behind him will not be difficult. If he wins by the 50 plus one that we are even talking about, then it gives the impression that he’s not carrying the entire party behind him.” He said.
The former Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency also addressed a long-standing rumors suggesting that then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo openly backed Dr. Bawumia during the primaries. He firmly denied any evidence of favoritism, pointing to the President’s repeated public and private assurances of neutrality.
“He was the President and he was his Vice President. I want to believe so, but it’s difficult for me to really state that case. He never told this at Cabinet. At Cabinet, he was always insistent that anybody who emerged victorious, he was going to support.
“He said so not on one occasion, but at least on all the meetings that I attended because there were a couple of meetings in the election year that I couldn’t attend because of our schedule in Parliament but those ones that I attended, on at least four different occasions, he made the statement.”
