Nigerian superstar and afrobeats artiste, Michael Adebayo Olayinka, popularly known as Ruger, has revealed that the Nigerian music industry is driven by pure business and not genuine friendship.
The Toma Toma hitmaker disclosed that it’s hard to find real friends in the industry who will stand by you through both good and bad times as an artiste.
He added that any artiste who manages to find such friends is indeed lucky.
“One thing I wish I knew earlier when I started my music career is that no one is your friend in the music industry,” Ruger stated.
He emphasized that while it is possible to have one or two genuine friends, that’s usually the best one can hope for.
“Sometimes, you can have one or two genuine friends who want to see you grow as an artiste. They stand by you even in hard times and try to fix those moments with you. That’s all, man,” Ruger said with emotion.
According to him, everything in the Nigerian music industry is purely business. Most people are around you for what you can offer them, not because of genuine friendship.
“I’m saying that everything is business. Nobody cares. Just know that everything is business. They are moving around with you because of something you can offer. Their interests come first.”
Ruger didn’t stop there. He added that the moment an artiste is no longer able to provide value, people around them quickly lose interest.
“The moment you might not be able to offer what you used to, they just switch just like that.”
He concluded by advising fellow artistes to be cautious.
“Always remember that the most genuine friends you can have are one or two or even none. So always be careful as an artiste.”
