President Mahama calls for reparative justice and continental unity in Africa Day 2025 address

President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has issued a passionate call for global justice in his Africa Day 2025 address, urging the world to confront the long and painful legacy of slavery, colonialism, and neocolonialism through meaningful reparations.

In his Africa Day 2025 message, President Mahama described this year’s celebration as historically significant, explaining the AU’s declaration of 2025 as the Year for Justice through Reparations. . As the Union’s designated champion for reparative justice, H. E. John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to the cause, urging collective action to address the long-standing legacies of slavery, colonialism, and neocolonialism.

“Reparations are not merely about financial compensation they are about acknowledging the profound and enduring damage inflicted upon our people. They are about confronting the uncomfortable truths of our past and taking concrete steps to rectify these wrongs,” he stated.

President Mahama further disclosed that reparative justice must go beyond apologies and payouts. He called for comprehensive measures that include formal apologies from the nations and institutions responsible, debt relief, economic empowerment, the return of stolen cultural artifacts, and robust educational investments to ensure that future generations fully understand Africa’s history and global contributions.

He also explained the importance of transforming Africa Day 2025 into a turning point for justice, unity, and progress, urging Africans at home and abroad to rise to the occasion and shape a future grounded in equity and dignity

“This is not a simple task it requires courage, determination, and a unified front,” he said. “I call upon my fellow African leaders, civil society organizations, youth groups, and members of the diaspora to join hands in this important endeavor.”

“Let us reaffirm our commitment to building a continent of prosperity, opportunity, and equality for all our people. Let the pursuit of reparations be a testament to our resilience, our determination, and our unwavering belief in a brighter future,” President Mahama concluded.
