Sunyani to get two new health centers this year – MCE assures

 

The Municipal Chief Executive for Sunyani East, Hon. Vincent Antwi Agyei has announced that the municipality is set to receive two new health centres this year, aimed at improving healthcare services for residents.

This announcement was made during an unannounced visit to the municipal hospital, where Hon. Antwi Agyei engaged with staff and patients to gain first-hand insight into the challenges faced by the facility.

The MCE revealed to Kaakyire Kwasi Afari of Sunyani-based Ark fm that the two new health centres will be funded by the District Assembly Common Fund, with the procurement process expected to commence in July.

Despite competing demands from other government agencies and institutions, Hon. Antwi Agyei emphasized that healthcare remains a priority for the over 120 communities in Sunyani, given its critical role in the well-being of residents.

He expressed his commitment to providing quality healthcare services and plans to seek support from NGOs and other partners to supplement the assembly’s efforts.

The MCE, municipal health director, and the assembly’s staff visit aimed to gather first-hand information on challenges and healthcare delivery, which will inform the assembly’s development plan.

During the visit, Hon. Antwi Agyei toured various departments, including surgical wards, theatres, accident and emergency units, surgical wards, ANC, labs, and other facilities.

While pleased with some upgraded infrastructure, Vincent Antwi Agyei expressed concern over certain conditions and infrastructure deficits, promising to address these challenges.

The Medical Superintendent, Dr. Michael Arthur, on his part, emphasized the need for immediate infrastructure expansion to enhance the facility’s capacity.

He told Kaakyire Kwasi Afari that the hospital, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027, faces significant infrastructure deficits, particularly in the emergency ward.

Dr. Arthur advocated for constructing a new block before demolishing the old one to ensure uninterrupted services.

He also highlighted pressing issues, including roof leakages and the need for essential medical equipment like mattresses, anaesthesia machines, and monitors.

Dr. Arthur called on the assembly to address these challenges and remove unauthorized kiosks and containers encroaching on the hospital’s surroundings, which compromise the facility’s aesthetic appeal and pose security risks.
