The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Techiman North, Hon. Adom Kwabena Johnson, has unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at improving agriculture in the district, with a focus on enhancing productivity and creating sustainable market opportunities for farmers
Hon. Adom Johnson revealed that over 60% of households in Techiman North rely on farming for their livelihood. As such, his administration is prioritizing agricultural development to improve the standard of living for farmers.
He further disclosed that his office is in advanced discussions with Oba Pack, a company that processes agricultural produce such as ginger, onions, and pepper, to secure a ready market for farmers in the district. He described the talks as “fruitful” and expressed optimism about the partnership.
Hon. Adom Kwabena Johnson made this statement during a one-on-one interview with Seih Kwabena Francis, popularly known as Rev. Nana Amakye, host of Classic FM’s Morning Show.
“We want to improve agriculture in the district. Over 60% of households in the Techiman North District are engaged in farming, so it is my vision to enhance agricultural activities in order to raise the standard of living for our farmers.”
“By the grace of God, we have companies like Oba Pack, which specializes in processing onions, ginger, peppers, and other produce. We have met with the company and held fruitful discussions,” he said.
He further disclosed that the assembly, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament and Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has already begun taking concrete steps to support farmers. Recently, the MP facilitated the delivery of 5,000 bags of fertilizer to the Techiman North Agriculture Department for distribution to vegetable farmers.
“Currently, we are actively encouraging our farmers to venture into onion and ginger farming, as there is a ready market for these crops,” the DCE emphasized. “One of the biggest challenges farmers face is post-harvest losses, but with the involvement of Oba Pack, we now have a reliable market. As I mentioned, our discussions with the company have been very promising.”
This initiative marks a significant move toward reducing poverty in the district and improving food security, while also addressing the long-standing issue of post-harvest losses faced by local farmers.
